Dallas Opening – The Thread That Binds 2011 Exhibition
The Thread that Binds—The 2011 Exhibition of Fine Bindings Presented by the Lone Star Chapter, Guild of Book Workers
In 2010, Lone Star Chapter member Pamela Leutz published The Thread That Binds: Interviews with Private Practice Bookbinders (Oak Knoll Press). To honor Ms. Leutz and her work, the Lone Star Chapter of the Guild of Book Workers invited its members to create fine bindings of this work for an exhibition. The result is an exciting array of 51 hand-crafted bindings that represent many artistic traditions, from historical to sculptural and everything in between. Coordinated by Exhibitions Committee co-chairs Esther Kibby and Jane Lenz Elder.
The Thread That Binds will open at the Degolyer Library on Friday, June 3, 2011, with a reception and remarks by the author. The exhibition will travel to the Museum of Printing History in Houston after its Dallas venue. The Houston venue will open with a reception on Thursday, September 29, 2011, and will be on exhibit to January 14, 2012.
The Lone Star Chapter has produced a handsome catalog that may be purchased through this site for $24.00, which includes shipping and handling. The catalog order form may be downloaded and printed from the Home page or for more information, please contact Catherine Burkhard at 214-363-7946 or Jane Elder at 214-768-7533.
Thanks for the email reminder this week to make sure membership dues were paid on time. Got mine paid yesterday via the new online payment system. It is so nice that the GBW is finally getting more of itself dragged into the late 20th century by accepting credits cards online!
Will be interesting to note how much quicker memberships get renewed/posted this way! –David.
Paid my GBW dues today, January 8, 2011. Sorry to be so late. Still planning on entering my binding of “The Thread That Binds” in the exhibition. Got my dues paid just in the nick of time.

please tell me the address to mail my entry for The Thread That Binds
Do you mean the entry fee(s) or the finished book entry?
Do I mail the entry fee in advance? I had filled in an intent to enter about six months ago but was never notified of a dues deadlines; I renewed my GBW dues and joined the Lone Star Chapter at that time; it was on 2/11/11. So I guess I have to pay the higher entry fee. Please advise what I need to do.
That information will be available very shortly. Watch for the posting on this site.
Thanks to all who worked to create the beautiful Thread that Binds exhibition catalog which just arrived today! Enjoyed the images of the reception and exhibition online. Wish I could have attended. Thanks also for creating the exhibition, and, of course, to Pam Leutz, for the book, itself.
The exhibitor’s submissions were an absolute delight to work with and made for a fabulous show. The attendees were quite impressed with the level of quality and creativity of the bindings. Thank you for your contribution as an exhibitor to this beautiful show.
